Theresa Zabell Lucas is a multifaceted woman, she is not only the founder of Ecomar but she also stood out as an important Olympic Athlete and deputy for Spain to the European Parliament for 5 years.

 

During all her life she has been particularly attracted to maritime affairs and from an early age she began to interact with the sea. At a sporting level, Theresa has achieved several recognitions throughout her career, becoming the double Olympic sailing champion in Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996 and 5 times world champion in sailing 470 class.

 

After retiring from Olympic sailing 20 years ago, Theresa decided to acquire a greater commitment to the sea, which is why she established the basis for Ecomar, a nonprofit foundation that is a pioneer in coastal cleanups, carrying out activities to raise awareness about sea care, especially attracting the youngest to contribute to the future of the planet. According to Theresa, her motivation was and has been to “protect our seas and hence our planet.”

 

Theresa is aware of the importance of the role of women in the sea and believes that there is still a way to go “We have come a long way but we still have some way to go, but we are on the right track.” and encourages women who wish to incur in maritime affairs, “Go for it. Follow your dreams.” For her, everything related to the sea has been fruitful and her mission is to return to the sea a little bit of everything it has given to her.
