Last July 2017, Mr José Maria Costa, President of the Conference of Atlantic Arc Cities (CAAC), addressed a letter to the President of the French Republic, Mr Emmanuel Macron, about the Climate Change Summit that will be held next December 12 in Paris.
Mr Costa praised this initiative and demonstrated the relevance of including a local and maritime dimension to the event. He added that cities should be given a central role in the debates so as to efficiently and jointly overcome the issues arising from climate change, as it was stated in the Final Declaration of CAAC General Assembly of 2017.
Here is what the President of the Atlantic network said to the President of France:
“Mr President of the French Republic,
The Conference of Atlantic Arc Cities (CAAC) is an international network of territorial cooperation based on the particular identity of the Atlantic Arc cities as fundamental actors for its development. CAAC represents almost 400 local entities in the European Atlantic basin.
Therefore, as President of the Conference of Atlantic Arc Cities, I welcome and congratulate your initiative, Mr President, for hosting a Summit on Climate Change next December 12. In this context, local entities and the challenges they face become major questions for this upcoming event. Among them, the topic of the Ocean is a priority in the fight against climate change. The protection of our coasts represents indeed a serious challenge that need to be commonly addressed. Several sectors are extremely affected by the modifications of climatic conditions such as employment, fisheries, ecosystems, tourism and transport.
Being primarily concerned by this threat, cities must be at the centre of the discussions on climate change. Thus, in order to be able to elaborate an effective response to this global problem, cities have to be recognised as they deserve and their power of action ought to be valued. Therefore, I would like to ask you to include not only a strong local perspective but also a significant maritime dimension in the Summit.”
We are waiting for a reply and CAAC invites other networks of cities to make the same request.Author : Atlantic Cities
