Sophie Leroy is the Director of “Armement Pêche Artisanale” (SARL Armement Cherbourgeois). She operates in the fishing area by managing 3 offshore trawlers (administrative and technical management) as well as staff on land and at sea.
Her parents were wholesalers and at the age of 9, she would come with them to the fish market; where she also used to eat with the wholesalers. At age 14, she worked with her parents in the family fish stall during the holidays. Her passion for the sea and the maritime field led Sophie to buy her first fishing vessel at 23 with her husband David.
In 2010, she was hired as Director at the Capam, “Cooperative d’Armement des pêcheurs de la Manche” (La Manche is a French County of the Normandy region). She worked in several maritime entities related to the improvement of the safety of fishing. 2016 was marked by one of Sophie’s greatest accomplishments because she received the insignia of “Chevalier de l’Ordre du Mérite” (official emblem, awarded by the President of France for distinguished civil achievements).
In maritime affairs, Sophie notes that “being a woman generates respect. Fishermen knew who I am and that I was very much engaged in this work.” According to her, the position of women in this business is undervalued. To Sophie, the most important ingredients for success are perseverance and strength of character.
